PLAY BETTER GOLF

"Unfortunately, according to the USGA, over 40% of male golfers and 90% of female golfers have a 15 handicap or higher. It simply shouldn't be this way."

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Most individuals begin their journey to play better golf with much enthusiasm. Unfortunately, most golf instruction lacks any semblance of a plan or structure and often leaves the golfer feeling frustrated by an unclear path toward meaningful improvement. This method of instruction is also seldom tied directly to the individual’s personal goals or capabilities which only exacerbates the discontent.

Kevin is a life-long learner. His entire teaching philosophy centers around prioritizing those elements of the game that are easiest to improve and most impactful to a golfer’s score in the shortest time possible. Kevin is passionate about the importance of the short game as a fundamental building block of a good golfer.

Kevin’s philosophy is backed up by facts. According to the PGA TOUR, the leading player in greens in regulation hits around 75%. That means the best golfer in the world still scrambles to score well and when they do, the best PGA TOUR players’ scrambling percentage is only 68%. When you now consider that according to surveys published by Golf.com and The Grit, the average 15 handicap golfer only hits a paltry 26% of greens in regulation and their scrambling ability when they do miss the green is below 20%, you begin to realize how important the short game is to shooting lower scores and enjoying the game more.

Kevin believes there are an infinite number of ways to swing a golf club. However, there is one most-efficient way for each player to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do. To achieve an efficient swing, a golfer must first be screened. Certified by the Titleist Performance Institute, Kevin utilizes the TPI evaluation methodology to assess the swing mechanics, biomechanics, physical fitness, movement quality, current health, and injury history of each client.

Kevin and I spent many hours on the practice range working on the techniques he’d acquired from his time with Hank Haney in the 1980s. Kevin’s knowledge of the game and his ability to communicate make him the perfect teacher for those looking to meaningfully improve their game.

Executing a long pitch shot or short iron shot both represent a miniature full swing. If a student can't hit those shots consistently with proper technique, it seems ridiculous to me to expend all your time, effort and energy on full swings with longer, more difficult golf clubs.

FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS

I wish I could tell my students that I have a special elixir that will instantly correct their swing faults. Unfortunately, it simply doesn't exist. The correct technique is only acquired by developing a deep understanding of the swing mechanics and through proper practice.

CREATING AN INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE

Kevin knows from personal experience how hard it is to make change happen in a golf swing. Made even more challenging with the time constraints and priorities of life.

BEGINNER

As you look around you realize golf can be an effective way of getting more exercise, meeting new people, deepening relationships and potentially even creating new business opportunities. You wish you knew how to play golf but simply don’t know where to start. The endless equipment alternatives, swing techniques and the time needed to do it all just seems daunting. Asking friends or co-workers doesn’t seem appealing either. With the initial cost of clubs and the time commitment the sport takes, you really want to be smart about how to get started. You need a coach that can listen to your goals, walk you through how to get going, create a personalized roadmap of success and provide one-on-one coaching to assist you in achieving your aspirations.

ACHIEVER

You are crazy busy yet you find time to work on your game but you are not seeing the progress you’d like. Your previous experience with golf instructors have left you with little improvement and you’re frustrated at yourself for not making the progress you believe you should. You are willing to put in the time and effort to make the game more enjoyable and play better. You are looking for a coach that can create a clear personalized plan of how to make meaningful improvement that is time efficient and effective and will support you along the way.

COMPETITOR

You are an aspiring young golfer with dreams of taking your game to the next level. You understand the basic fundamentals of golf but you’ve hit a ceiling in your performance. You’d like to understand deeply what is holding you back both physically and mentally but haven’t found a coach who can combine the physical aspects of golf technique with the command of the mental aspects of the game such as course strategy, tournament preparation and positive expectation setting that are so vital to going from the practice area to actually winning. You’d like to build a trust-based relationship with a coach that has been in your shoes, understands what you are going through, the effort is takes and is committed to your success.

COMPETITIVE GOLFER WITH 40+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

TAUGHT BY THE BEST

Growing up in Oklahoma, Kevin began taking lessons from 3-time (consecutive) Oklahoma Amateur Champion, Glen Fowler at the age of 15. Glen was renowned for his short game and this influenced Kevin’s approach to the game in a significant way. As he progressed as a competitive golfer, Kevin realized he needed to become a more consistent ball striker. In the spring of 1985, during his junior year at Division I Oklahoma City University, Kevin sought out a young breakout golf instructor, Hank Haney. Hank was gaining notoriety given one of his pupils, Mark O’Meara, had jumped on the scene of the PGA TOUR with a beautiful swing and the ability to win.

Hank and Kevin began working together to revamp his long game. They focused on creating a more rounded backswing that facilitated a shallower angle of attack through the ball. The new swing concept was vastly different from Kevin’s previous technique. Kevin found it excruciatingly difficult to make such a dramatic change and it took hours of repetition and practice to ingrain the new approach. Within six months of working with Hank, Kevin felt confident his swing would hold up during the pressure of collegiate competition.

TURNING KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE INTO WINNING

During his collegiate career, Kevin won a total of seven golf tournaments and was runner-up three other times including at the Division I Midwestern City Conference Championship at the Donald Ross course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana. His sudden death playoff record was three for four winning the University of Arkansas Little Rock Spring Invitational twice. During his senior year, Kevin won a remarkable six tournaments both in the United States and Mexico. In the fall of 1985, during his senior year, Kevin won four consecutive collegiate tournaments including the prestigious U.C. Ferguson All-College Golf Classic. At the Fairmont Acapulco Princess Resort in Acapulco, Mexico, his final round 66 at the Acapulco Princess Invitational tied Jay Sigel’s competitive course record at the Pierre Marquis course which assured Kevin of his first international victory.

Kevin was chosen OCU’s Player of the Year his senior season of 1985-86. He was inducted into OCU’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

His induction into OCU's Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 served as a capstone to a phenomenal collegiate golf career and recognition of his many contributions to the legacy of success in OCU Athletics.
